During 5th year, at the University of Bath, we were given the opportunity to spend time focusing on the process of a project. During this time I explored with drawing, painting, diagrams and model making. Often within this development I focused on the theme of light and the above/below which were connected to my initial site response. The bottom drawing shows the first drawing of the site, exploring the shadows created by surrounding buildings at different times of day. The sites landscape was developed by the masterplan created by myself and seven other students. We began the process by considering the sites history and footprint, this identified to us lines of site that were once penetrating through buildings from the city to the river. This is something that was carried through into the final scheme. Furthermore we reconsidered what a city could be and how a more natural environment would improve the cities environment and experience. We proposed different tree densities throughout the site, some areas housing tiny forests, whilst others a singular tree. This creates different enclosure/exposure within the experience on site. As a team we also embraced the river bringing water onto site through small brooks or wetland areas. A ‘sponge’ site. The building has connections to the landscape throughout. On the journey through the 4 buildings there are external spaces that could be used differently. The entrance links to the main square, which connects to 3 other schemes created by my course mates. During the masterplan development myself and the neighbours of my building met many times to discuss the spaces in-between. Another external connection is the bridge on site, linking the south side of the river to the north.
